Buckler's Forest

The woodland around Wokingham isn't famous, and that's precisely why Buckler's Forest works. This is proper old-growth mixed forest - the kind where you can actually walk without feeling herded down a theme-park path. The trees have real character, ancient oaks mixed with beech and birch, creating that dappled-light effect that makes you genuinely want to linger rather than tick it off.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The paths wind naturally through the woodland, and there's enough network here to spend a couple of hours if you're keen, or settle for a brisk half-hour circuit if you're not. The forest floor is soft underfoot, which is lovely, though it does get boggy after rain - proper boots recommended. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main paths, though don't expect playgrounds or facilities. This is about the walk itself, the quiet, the occasional wildlife sighting.

There's no visitor centre or admission charge that I'm aware of - it's simply there, which is refreshing. Spring is magic when the bluebells come through, but honestly, any season works if you're after a genuine woodland walk rather than a postcard moment.

If you're basing yourself at nearby Warfield Park or Scotlands House, Buckler's Forest makes a solid morning outing before heading somewhere busier. It won't be a full day's entertainment, but it's worth the short drive from Wokingham town centre for a proper reset in actual forest rather than manicured parkland.
