Bulbarrow Hill

The Iron Age fort on Bulbarrow Hill commands the sort of view that makes you understand why someone decided to live here 2,000 years ago. From Sturminster Newton, it's a proper walk up - steep in places - but once you're on the summit, the Dorset countryside spreads out in all directions. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking for: defensive ditches and ramparts that once sheltered an entire community.

This isn't a polished visitor experience. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretation boards explaining everything. You turn up, climb the hill, and piece it together yourself. That's precisely why it appeals to archaeologists, history enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys a good walk with actual purpose. Most people allow an hour to reach the top and poke about, though energetic walkers could do it in less.

It's free, obviously - there's nothing to charge for out here. Best visited on a clear day when the views justify the effort. Midweek mornings are quieter if you prefer solitude.

The hill pairs well with a base at Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park or Starlight Glamping, both within easy reach. Combine it with other Dorset walks and you've got a solid few days of getting outdoors without the tourist crowds. Not for everyone - kids might find it a bit dull if they're expecting something more dramatic - but if you like your history raw and your views uninterrupted, it's worth the climb.
