Bulls Wood

Deep woodland covers this stretch of the Isle of Wight just south of Cowes, offering proper forest walks without the crowds you'll find at better-known spots. Bulls Wood gives you that rare feeling of having stumbled upon somewhere genuinely wild, with thick canopy overhead and well-worn paths threading between ancient trees.

Families with energetic kids will love the freedom to roam here - there's space to build dens, hunt for wildlife, and generally let off steam away from traffic. The paths aren't too challenging for little legs, though you'll want to bring wellies if it's been wet. Dog walkers particularly rate this place for the off-lead opportunities.

Expect to spend a good hour or two if you're exploring properly, longer if the children get absorbed in woodland adventures. The forest feels properly established, with that lovely mix of oak, ash and beech that makes for brilliant autumn colours.

Staying at nearby Parkdean Resorts Thorness Bay or The Orchards, this makes a cracking alternative to beach days when the weather turns. It's close enough for an easy morning walk but far enough from the holiday park bustle to feel like a proper escape into nature.
