Bulls Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Bulls Wood sits just outside Lingfield in Sussex and delivers exactly what you'd hope for from a local forest - decent paths, quiet air, and enough trees to feel like you've left the commuter belt behind.

The woodland itself is straightforward. You're walking through mixed forest with established paths that don't demand hiking boots or navigation skills. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear birdsong, which feels rarer than it should be. The canopy's thick enough in summer to offer genuine shade, and in autumn the light filtering through the turning leaves is proper lovely.

Families with younger kids will get a solid hour out of it; older children who like proper walks can stretch that to two. The paths are mostly gentle, though watch for exposed roots after rain. There's nothing dramatic - no vistas, no heritage sites, no cafe - so come for the walking rather than the spectacle.

Timing-wise, early morning or late afternoon beats weekends if you want space to yourself. Weekday visits in autumn are best - fewer families, better light.

If you're camping at Hook Farm Campsite just down the road, Bulls Wood is an easy leg-stretch between park days. It won't replace a proper forest expedition, but as a local walk from base camp it works well enough. The ground can get boggy after wet weather, so pick your moment.
