Bullshaigh Wood

The woodland around Bullshaigh isn't particularly famous, and that's exactly why it works. You get proper forest walking without the crowds that plague somewhere like Kielder - though Kielder is worth the drive if you're already in Northumberland. These are the kind of trees that make you remember why you live in Britain rather than somewhere with constant sunshine.

It's straightforward stuff: woodland paths, dappled light filtering through the canopy, the occasional moment where you genuinely can't hear anything. Good for families with kids who can manage uneven ground, excellent for anyone wanting to tire out a spaniel, fine for a two-hour circuit before heading into Stocksfield for a proper lunch. The paths are well-trodden without being boardwalked to death.

You won't find a visitor centre or facilities, so bring water and make sure your phone's got a signal if you're the type who needs it. Spring's lovely here - bluebells doing their thing - but honestly autumn's when you want to be in any Northumberland wood, the light's softer and the smell is sharper.

Not a destination in itself - more the kind of place you discover on a longer Northumberland trip when you're sick of driving between bigger attractions. No drama, no admission charge likely, just straightforward woodland. That's the point.
