Bunkers Copse

Deep woodland covers this patch of ancient copse between Newport and the island's southern coast, offering proper countryside walking without the crowds that descend on better-known spots. The paths wind through mature oak and beech, with enough fallen logs and muddy trails to keep children entertained while adults enjoy the peace.

Families staying at nearby parks like Appuldurcombe Gardens or Springfield Oaks will find this a lovely escape when the holiday park gets too busy. The woodland feels properly wild - no manicured paths or visitor centres here, just honest-to-goodness forest where you might spot red squirrels if you're lucky.

Bring wellies, especially after rain, as the paths can get properly boggy. There's no formal car park that I could find, so you'll need to hunt for roadside spaces near the woodland edge. Allow an hour or two for a good wander, though enthusiastic dog walkers could easily spend longer.

This isn't going to wow teenagers, but younger children love the freedom to climb and explore. The copse works well as a morning adventure before heading to the coast, giving families a taste of the island's quieter side. Just don't expect facilities - pack snacks and water, and maybe a change of clothes for muddy explorers.
