About Burdale railway tunnel

The tunnel entrance sits unexpectedly in the middle of nowhere near Driffield, a low brick archway half-swallowed by vegetation and the slow creep of the Yorkshire countryside. This is what's left of the Malton to Driffield railway line, closed in 1958, and the tunnel itself stretches for over half a mile under Burdale village. You can't walk through it - it's flooded and unstable - but walking to the portal and back takes about 20 minutes from the nearby track, which forms part of the Driffield to Malton walking route. It's genuinely eerie. The brickwork's in decent nick given its age, and there's something oddly moving about finding infrastructure this substantial just... abandoned. Not much of a destination on its own, mind you. Families with restless kids might find 20 minutes standing about looking at a tunnel entrance underwhelming. But if you're already doing the walking route between Driffield and Malton, it's absolutely worth the detour. History buffs tend to appreciate the scale of Victorian engineering tucked away in farmland. The nearest proper stop is Seaways Glamping and Camping, about 2.5 miles away, which gives you a decent base for exploring the walking trails and local heritage properly. Go in dry weather - the approach track can get boggy. Free to visit, no facilities, no faffing about with opening hours.
