Burgh Castle Roman Site

The Roman fort here sits on a Norfolk hilltop overlooking the River Yare, and it's genuinely one of those places that stops you mid-walk. Three sides of the defensive wall still stand, built around 285 AD to guard against Saxon raiders - proper substantial bit of stonework considering how many centuries it's had to weather. You can walk right up to it, run your hands along the flint and rubble if you fancy, and from the top of that bank the views across the marshland are genuinely lovely.

HistoryHeads will want to spend a good hour here, photographing the walls from different angles and imagining the Roman garrison keeping watch. Kids under ten might get restless after 20 minutes unless you spin them a story about invasions and soldiers. The walk itself is pleasant if unspectacular - flat terrain around Great Yarmouth, so no dramatic hiking required.

It's free access, thankfully, and there's no entry fee or visitor centre to queue at. Spring or autumn are best - summer gets a bit marshy and midgy. If you're based at Haven Wild Duck Holiday Park just down the road (barely a mile away), it's an easy morning detour before heading into Great Yarmouth proper. Couples and solo walkers will appreciate the quiet; families needing multiple attractions on one day might want to combine it with coastal walks nearby. Worth 45 minutes of anyone's time if you're already in the area.
