Burleigh Wood

Walk into Burleigh Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper old-growth forest - the kind where the canopy gets so thick your eyes take a moment to adjust. It's ancient woodland, the real deal, with paths that wind through beech and oak trees that have been standing for centuries.

The main draw here is straightforward: a decent walk through genuine forest without the theme park feel. You get dappled light, the smell of leaf mulch, and if you time it right, the floor carpeted in bluebells come spring. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which makes a change. Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore the main trails. There's enough here to keep walkers satisfied without being so vast you need a map and a GPS.

Families will manage fine if kids are old enough for proper woodland walking - say, past the "I'm bored" stage of about six or seven. Muddy shoes guaranteed, which is rather the point. The woodland is free to access, which doesn't hurt either.

Bethersden sits just a few miles away, making this a sensible addition if you're staying at one of the glamping setups nearby - Chegworth Mill or Go Glamp are both close enough for a morning or afternoon sortie. Perfect for breaking up a longer park holiday with something that actually feels like England rather than a manicured attraction. No facilities on site, mind you, so sort yourself out in the village first.
