Bury Hill

The walk up Bury Hill takes about twenty minutes from Ross-on-Wye, and it's steep enough to get your heart going but short enough that you won't regret it halfway up. The summit itself is modest - a clearing with decent views across the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean beyond. On a clear day, you can see proper far. It's free, naturally, and there's no official opening hours because it's just a hill you walk up.

This is a proper walkers' spot rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at one of the glamping sites nearby - Ryeford Ponds is closest at under a mile away - it makes a fine morning outing before breakfast. Families with children aged eight upwards will manage it without complaint. Younger kids might find the climb tedious. Bring decent boots because the path gets muddy, particularly after rain.

The appeal isn't in elaborate infrastructure or facilities. There's nothing up there but grass, air, and the view. What you get is a quick leg-stretch and a proper sense of being somewhere, not just passing through. In summer the bracken can get tall enough to swallow you, which changes the whole feel of it.

Combine it with Ross-on-Wye itself if you've got a full day - the riverside walk is genuine, and the town's small enough to explore without exhaustion. If you're based at Broadmeadow or Haywood Farm further out, Bury Hill works as an easy detour on the way into town. Worth the walk? Yes. Worth a special trip? Only if you're already in the area.
