The Penyard

Rising to 373 metres above Ross-on-Wye, this limestone hill delivers proper views across the Wye Valley and into Wales on a clear day. The walk up isn't particularly taxing - about 45 minutes from the village of Goodrich - though the final push through woodland can get muddy after rain.

Walkers will find the summit satisfying rather than spectacular. There's no dramatic peak moment, just a gradual clearing where the trees part to reveal rolling countryside stretching towards the Black Mountains. Kids might find it a bit dull compared to proper adventure playgrounds, but teenagers who don't mind a decent trudge often appreciate the sense of achievement.

The best approach is from the Goodrich side, where you can combine it with a visit to the castle ruins below. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to appreciate the views and catch your breath. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the valley look its best.

For families staying at nearby sites like Broadmeadow Caravan Park or Ryeford Ponds, it's a solid half-day option when the weather's decent. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments, and proper walking boots are advisable given the sometimes slippery woodland paths. Worth doing if you're in the area for a few days and fancy stretching your legs properly.
