Bury Wood

A proper Essex woodland that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. Bury Wood is the sort of place where you might spot muntjac deer if you're quiet enough, and where the paths are wide enough that you won't feel hemmed in by the trees. It's dense in places, open in others - a working woodland rather than some manicured country estate.

Walkers get the most out of it, honestly. The ground's manageable most of the year, though winter can leave it boggy near the lower sections. You're looking at an hour or two depending on which routes you take - nothing complicated, but enough woodland to feel like you've actually gone somewhere rather than done a loop around a car park. Families with kids aged five and up will find it fine; younger ones might find the lack of specific attractions a bit dull after twenty minutes.

Free to access, which is always a win. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best visited on a dry day - it's real forest floor, not tarmac.

From Barleylands Campsite or Stuarts Wood, both just four miles south of Billericay, you're ideally placed for this sort of walking. It slots nicely into a weekend where you're mixing woodland time with the leisure facilities the campsites themselves offer. Not a destination in its own right, but exactly the kind of local spot that makes a quiet park holiday feel properly restful.
