Butter's Tor

The walk up Butter's Tor rewards you with one of Bodmin Moor's best vantage points - a proper workout to reach the summit, but the views across the moorland make it entirely worthwhile. The tor itself is a distinctive granite peak that dominates the landscape around here, and on a clear day you can see for miles across the open heath and rolling hills.

It's a straightforward climb with no technical difficulty, though the path can get boggy depending on the weather. Allow a good hour there and back from the car, maybe longer if you want to linger at the top and properly take in the panorama. The moorland feels properly wild - you're surrounded by heather and gorse, with barely another soul around on quieter days.

Walkers will absolutely love this. Families with older children find it manageable, though younger legs might grumble about the steepness towards the summit. History buffs appreciate the Bronze Age archaeology scattered across the moor itself, though the tor is more about the landscape than dramatic ruins.

Free to visit, naturally - it's Cornish moorland. Spring and early summer are lovely for wildflowers, though honestly any time outside thick fog is decent. If you're camping nearby at Camp De Lank or either of the glamping spots, this makes an ideal morning excursion before breakfast.
