Garrow Tor

The walk up Garrow Tor isn't long, but it's sharp enough to get your heart going. You're climbing granite moorland just outside Bodmin, and the views across the clay pits and rolling Cornish landscape open up properly once you crest the ridge. The tor itself - that rocky outcrop at the top - isn't massive, but it's the kind of place where you understand why Cornish walkers rate it. Takes maybe forty minutes from the car park, depending on fitness.

It's free to walk, which is always welcome. The summit gives you that proper sense of achievement without needing a full day on your feet. Families with teenagers will get on with it fine; younger kids might find the final scramble a bit tedious, and the exposed moorland wind can be brutal on days when the weather turns. History buffs won't find much to chew on here - it's geology rather than archaeology - but it's a decent addition to a moorland walk loop if you're exploring Bodmin Moor properly.

The nearest camping spots are within five miles: Camp De Lank is your closest option, with Trewithen Farm and Rosebud Farm also within striking distance if you're planning a longer stay. Go on a clear day. The mist rolls in fast on Bodmin Moor, and there's nothing romantic about hiking blind through gorse and heather. Morning visits work best - you'll beat the weekend crowds and catch the light properly.
