Byron’s Pool Weir

The weir itself is rather modest - a modest concrete structure across the Cam that most people would walk past without thinking twice. But stop here, and you've found what locals have quietly known for years: a proper swimming spot that feels secret despite being barely a mile from central Cambridge.

Lord Byron supposedly swam here naked back in the day, hence the name. Whether that's entirely true hardly matters when you're standing on the bank watching the water create a deep, clear pool ideal for a dip on a warm day. The surrounding meadow is lovely for spreading out a picnic, and there's a small car park nearby, though it fills quickly on summer weekends.

Walkers will find this a natural stopping point on riverside rambles heading towards Grantchester. The path is well-trodden and easy enough for families with young kids, though don't expect playground facilities or facilities of any real kind - it's just water, grass, and sky. Swimming ability matters here; the pool has a decent current and depth changes, so supervise children closely.

It's free to visit and takes perhaps 30 minutes to an hour depending on whether you're jumping in or simply taking in the scene. Early morning visits beat the crowds by miles.
