Cadson Bury Hill Fort - National Trust

You're looking at one of Cornwall's finest Iron Age hillforts, a proper fortress of earth and stone that still dominates the landscape near Callington. The site covers eight acres, ringed by defensive ramparts that - even after two millennia - make you understand why people chose this spot. The views from the top are excellent, sweeping across the Tamar Valley towards Devon.

It's a straightforward walk up from the car park, nothing technically difficult but the ground can be muddy after rain. Once at the summit, you get a real sense of the fort's scale and layout. The concentric rings of banks and ditches are still visible, and on a clear day the panorama justifies the modest effort required. Most visitors spend 45 minutes to an hour up here.

History buffs will find it genuinely absorbing, particularly if you're interested in Iron Age settlement patterns. Families with older kids do well here - it's interactive in the way only ruins can be, letting them scramble and explore rather than just stare at a plaque. Younger children might lose interest quickly, though they'll enjoy the walk itself.

The National Trust manages the site and access is free. It pairs nicely with other Bronze and Iron Age sites dotted around East Cornwall. Go midweek if you can - weekends draw more visitors, and the fort loses some of its contemplative quality.
