Oakpark Wood

Walk into Oakpark Wood near Callington and you're immediately swallowed by mature trees and a canopy so thick it stays cool even on warm days. The forest floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with moss and leaf litter, and the air smells exactly how you'd want a Cornish woodland to smell - damp earth and green growing things. It's the sort of place where you actually hear the quiet.

This works brilliantly for families who want their kids to burn energy without the hectare-long commitment of a proper moorland trek. Most visits take an hour or two depending on how much you dawdle, and there's something satisfying about a forest that doesn't require a rigid trail or interpretive boards at every turn. Just trees, paths, and the occasional fallen log to climb over.

Historically minded walkers and photographers will find plenty to occupy them - the wood has that layered feel that comes from centuries of being part of the Cornish landscape. Bring a decent camera if you're into woodland light and shadow work.
