Caigton Hill

Standing at 218 metres above sea level, this modest hill offers surprisingly rewarding views across the Solway Firth and surrounding Dumfries countryside. The walk up takes about 45 minutes from the nearest parking spot along the quiet country lanes south of Castle Douglas.

Families with reasonably fit children will manage the ascent without too much huffing and puffing. The path isn't marked but it's fairly obvious once you get going - follow the old fence line through the bracken and you'll reach the grassy summit easily enough. On a clear day, you can see across to the Lake District fells and the Isle of Man beyond.

What makes Caigton Hill particularly appealing is how uncrowded it remains. While everyone heads to the Galloway Hills proper, this little peak gets overlooked despite being right on the doorstep of several holiday parks around Kippford and Castle Douglas. The views aren't spectacular - let's be honest - but they're perfectly pleasant for an hour's leg stretch.

Bring a flask if you're making it a proper outing. There's nowhere to buy refreshments once you leave Castle Douglas behind. The hill works well as a gentle warm-up if you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Kippford and planning bigger walks later in the week.
