Knox Hill

Rising 302 metres above the Solway countryside, this modest summit delivers views that punch well above its weight. The climb from Castle Douglas takes about 45 minutes through farmland and heather moorland, with a proper path most of the way. Nothing too demanding, though the final stretch gets a bit steep.

From the top, you'll see across to the Lake District fells on clear days, with the Solway Firth stretching out below and the Galloway Hills rolling away to the north. It's a cracking spot for a picnic if the wind isn't howling. Families with older kids will manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the rougher sections near the summit.

The walk's free, naturally, and you can tackle it year-round though spring and autumn offer the best visibility. Allow two hours return if you're taking your time. It's well worth combining with a trip to nearby Threave Castle or a wander around Castle Douglas itself.

For those staying at one of the holiday parks around Kippford or near Castle Douglas, Knox Hill makes a decent morning expedition. The views justify the effort, and it's proper countryside walking without the crowds you'd find on the bigger Galloway peaks.
