Cairnholy 1

The stones themselves are what you actually come for at Cairnholy 1. Two enormous granite slabs stand upright near Castle Douglas, flanking what was once a Neolithic burial chamber - we're talking 5,000 years old here. It's genuinely impressive in person, though the site is what it is: you walk up, you look at the stones, you wonder about the people who built it, and then you're done within twenty minutes.

Archaeology enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. The setting matters too - it's surrounded by moorland and fields, so you get proper views across Dumfries & Galloway rather than staring at some ruin wedged between car parks. The walk isn't strenuous, which makes it manageable for families with younger children, though there's nothing interactive or interpretive on-site to hold their attention if they're not already keen on ancient monuments.

Timing-wise, spring or early autumn works well when the weather's mild and you're not trudging through mud. The site is free to access and there's no time limit, so you can linger as long as you fancy. If you're staying at Auchenlarie Holiday Park nearby (just 1.6 miles away), it's an easy addition to your day. Drumroamin Farm is a bit further out but equally convenient if you're basing yourself there.

Honestly? It's a proper Scottish archaeology spot rather than a polished tourist attraction, which is exactly what makes it feel genuine. Well worth thirty minutes if you're interested in Neolithic sites - less so if you're just after something to do on a rainy afternoon.
