This working ice cream parlour and farm shop sits just outside Castle Douglas, and it's the sort of place you'll either love or find a bit underwhelming depending on what you're after. The setup is straightforward: you can watch ice cream being made on-site, browse their farm shop, and grab a cone or a proper sundae in the café. The ice cream itself is genuinely good - made from local dairy milk, so it tastes like actual cream rather than the mass-produced stuff.

Families with young kids will get the most mileage out of a visit, especially on a summer afternoon when you can sit outside and watch the production happening behind glass. Adults who care about where their food comes from might appreciate the farm shop side of things, though it's not enormous. The whole visit takes maybe an hour, tops - longer if you dawdle over ice cream.

It's free to look around, though obviously you'll pay for anything you buy. Go mid-afternoon rather than peak times if you want a quieter experience. The real draw is that it feels authentically local and not touristy, which is refreshing for this part of Scotland. If you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Auchenlarie, Brighouse Bay or Seaward are all within a few miles - it's absolutely worth popping in for pudding after a day walking or exploring Castle Douglas itself. Don't go out of your way for it alone, but if you're in the area, the ice cream lives up to the hype.
