Cairnlea Hill

The walk up Cairnlea Hill rewards you with views across Aberdeenshire that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a massive undertaking - more of a proper hill walk than a mountain expedition - and the path from Strathdon is straightforward enough without being boring.

You're looking at a couple of hours round trip if you're taking it steady, maybe less if you power up. The summit itself isn't dramatic or craggy, but the panorama across the Highlands justifies the effort. On a good day you can pick out the bigger peaks in the distance. The heather moorland around you feels properly wild, which is the whole point of coming out here.

This suits walkers more than families with small kids - the terrain is firm underfoot but there's not much to do once you're up there except stand about and admire things. History enthusiasts won't find crumbling castles or archaeological drama, but you get a real sense of the Scottish landscape's vastness.

Strathdon itself is a small, quiet village, so don't expect shops or cafes at the trailhead. Stock up before you head out. The climb is free, obviously. Early autumn is excellent timing - the weather's more stable and the light's kinder than summer. Cairngorms Glamping & Campsite is just over three miles away and would give you a comfortable base for exploring this part of the Highlands without feeling like you've landed in a theme park.
