Càrn na Gobhair

The walk up Càrn na Gobhair from Strathdon rewards you with big views across the Cairngorms without requiring proper mountaineering skills. It's a decent hill rather than a dramatic peak - you're looking at maybe two hours up and back depending on your pace and where you start from the glen.

What you get at the top is classic Scottish high ground: rolling plateaus, distant ridges, and on a clear day the kind of visibility that makes you understand why people get addicted to these hills. The approach is straightforward enough for fit families with older kids, though younger ones might find the slog a bit much. There's nothing technical, just gradient and endurance.

Timing-wise, start early. Weather changes fast up here, and you want daylight on your side. Spring through autumn works fine, though midges can be grim in summer. The whole thing is free - no car parks, no fees, just you and the hill.

It slots nicely into a longer Cairngorms trip. You're only a few miles from Cairngorms Glamping & Campsite and Howe of Torbeg, both solid bases for a few nights of hill-bagging. Strathdon itself is small but functional - petrol, supplies, that sort of thing. The landscape around here is proper wild: Lochnagar isn't far off, and there's better walking within half an hour's drive in any direction. Càrn na Gobhair is more of a solid warm-up than a destination on its own, but it's worth doing if you're in the area.
