Calf Holes / Dry Lathe Cave

Walking up the limestone valley from Settle, you'll spot the dark mouth of Calf Holes appearing in the pale stone face - a proper cave system that rewards a bit of scrambling. It's small, maybe 20 minutes to explore properly, but the approach itself is the draw: good moorland walking with the hills closing in around you. The cave itself is more intimate than dramatic - no vast chambers, just tight passages where you duck and shuffle through, feeling the weight of the rock above. Walkers get the most from this one. You're looking at about two hours round trip from Settle, depending on fitness and how much time you spend poking about inside. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring the climbing community out, and it gets a bit crowded for what's essentially a modest cave. The Dry Lathe Cave nearby is another entrance to the same system - worth trying both if you're keen. Free to visit, no facilities, bring a torch and wear proper boots. The real win is how it slots into a bigger day out: you can combine it with the Yorkshire Dales Way walk or a circuit of nearby peaks. If you're based at Ribblesdale Pods or Philpin Farm Campsite, you're perfectly placed - both are three to four miles away. Families with younger children might find the scrambling a bit much, and anyone with claustrophobia should skip it entirely. It's the kind of place that stays with you more for the walk to it than the cave itself.
