Cambrian Heritage Railways - (Weston Wharf,Station)

The railway station at Weston Wharf still operates heritage trains along a preserved stretch of track, and there's something genuinely moving about watching a proper steam engine come through on a Saturday afternoon. You can ride these restored carriages through the Powys countryside - not a theme park experience, but the real thing, run by volunteers who clearly know their stuff.

It's absolutely brilliant for railway enthusiasts and families with kids who aren't too demanding about entertainment. The journey itself takes around an hour depending on which service you catch, and the landscape rolling past the windows does justify the trip. Adults often get more from it than children, if I'm honest - unless your kids are properly into engines, they might find it a bit slow.

The station sits just outside Oswestry, making it an easy detour if you're camping nearby. Both Fairhaven Camping and Glamping and Sweeney Farm Glamping are within walking distance practically, and if you're staying further afield at Tanat Holiday Park or Cranberry Moss, it's a short drive worth making on a decent weather day.

Check their website before you go for running times and ticket prices - these volunteer operations aren't always consistent with schedules. Go on a weekend if you want the full experience with steam engines; weekday services sometimes run diesel locomotives instead. Allow three hours total if you're making a proper afternoon of it.
