Cameron Reservoir

Three miles southwest of St Andrews, this working reservoir cuts a proper swathe through rolling Fife countryside. Built in the 1970s to supply water to the region, Cameron Reservoir has evolved into a surprisingly good spot for a quiet walk or bit of angling.

The two-mile perimeter path makes for a decent leg-stretch, though don't expect dramatic Highland scenery - this is gentle farmland walking with the occasional glimpse of the Lomond Hills in the distance. Dog walkers seem to have claimed it as their own, and you'll rarely have the place to yourself on weekends.

Fishing folk will find brown trout and rainbow trout, though you'll need a permit from the local angling association. Families might find it a bit short on excitement after the first circuit - there's no playground or café, just the path and plenty of waterfowl to spot. The car park is small but adequate, and it's free to visit.

For those staying at nearby holiday parks like Craigtoun Meadows or St Andrews Holiday Park, it's worth the short drive if you fancy escaping the coast for an hour. The walking's easy enough for most ages, and it pairs well with a trip into St Andrews afterwards. Just don't expect Instagram-worthy views - this is functional countryside at its most honest.
