This ancient university town on Fife's coast manages to feel both impossibly grand and refreshingly down-to-earth, with medieval streets leading to sweeping coastal views and students mingling with pilgrims on golf's most famous fairways.

The Old Course might grab the headlines, but the Eden Course and Strathtyrum Course offer equally challenging rounds without the eye-watering green fees. Between golf sessions, wander through the atmospheric ruins of St Andrews Cathedral or climb St Rule's Tower for proper views across the North Sea. The Italian Garden provides a lovely spot for a breather, while Gallery 201 showcases contemporary Scottish art worth a look.

Beyond town, the countryside opens up beautifully. Cameron Reservoir is a cracking spot for a walk, especially when the light catches the water just right. Reres Wood and Lumbo Den offer woodland trails that feel worlds away from the tourist bustle, while Drumcarrow Craig rewards a bit of a climb with views stretching to the Highlands on clear days.

Getting here couldn't be simpler - it's a straightforward drive from Edinburgh or Dundee, with decent train connections to nearby Leuchars station. The town gets absolutely rammed during the summer months and major golf tournaments, so timing matters.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to walk into town for dinner but far enough out to escape the crowds.
