Cannock Lake

The lake itself is the draw here - a proper freshwater reservoir that's become something of a local haven for birdwatchers and anyone after a quiet walk. It sits just outside Stafford, and the water's ringed by woodland paths that take you away from road noise within minutes. You're looking at an easy circuit of about two hours if you do the whole thing, though most people just potter around for an hour and call it good.

Wildlife is the main event. Herons, cormorants, the occasional kingfisher if you're lucky and patient. In autumn, migrating birds stop off in decent numbers, which gets the binoculars brigade out in force. Winter's quieter but the bare trees mean better sightlines across the water. Summer can feel a touch crowded on weekends, especially when Stafford's families fancy a break from town.

It's free to access - no gates, no ticket booths, just turn up. The paths are generally well-maintained, though after heavy rain they can get a bit boggy in places. Families with younger kids will manage the walking fine, though there's not much in the way of facilities, so bring supplies.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks dotted around Cannock Chase - Tackeroo or Four Oaks Farm are reasonably close - this makes a solid half-day outing alongside whatever else the Chase itself offers. It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a rushed afternoon.
