Cannock Park

The heathland around Cannock stretches across Staffordshire like something from a Victorian painting - open, windswept, and genuinely wild in places. Cannock Park itself is the jewel of this landscape, a proper nature reserve where you can actually walk without bumping into crowds. The terrain shifts between purple heather moorland and patches of birch woodland, which sounds small until you're actually out there and realise you've lost sight of civilisation entirely.

What you're really coming for is the walking. Miles of footpaths crisscross the reserve, ranging from gentle afternoon ambles to proper leg-testing hikes. Spring brings carpets of gorse and new growth; autumn turns the heather bronze and gold. Birdwatchers do well here - you'll spot adders basking on the paths if you're lucky, and the insect life is genuinely remarkable for an area this close to Stafford.

It's free to roam, which helps. No visitor centre theatrics, just actual landscape. That said, bring a decent map or use your phone - the paths aren't always obvious and it's easy to wander in circles. Allow at least two hours for anything worthwhile.

If you're camping nearby - and there's no shortage of sites within five miles, including Cannock Chase Camping & Caravanning Club - this becomes your morning activity before the day heats up. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the flat terrain tedious. History buffs should know the Chase has been hunted since medieval times, though little physical evidence remains. Come for the walking and fresh air, not for attractions.
