Canovium Roman Fort

Two thousand years of Welsh rain have done their worst here, leaving little more than grassy mounds and partial stone foundations where Roman soldiers once patrolled. Canovium served as an auxiliary fort from around 78 AD, strategically positioned to watch over the Conwy valley and keep the local Ordovices tribe in line. What remains today requires a fair bit of imagination to appreciate.

Archaeology enthusiasts and Roman history buffs will find the most to enjoy, particularly if they've done their homework beforehand. The site reveals traces of barracks, a principia (headquarters building), and defensive ditches, though casual visitors might struggle to make sense of the scattered remains. A walk around the perimeter takes about 20 minutes, but allow longer if you want to properly examine the surviving masonry.

Families staying at nearby Wern Farm Caravan Park or Erw Glas Glamping might find it a decent leg-stretcher, especially combined with a trip into Conwy itself. The medieval castle and town walls offer far more dramatic ruins just down the road.
