Capull Cloiche

The rocky summit of Capull Cloiche rises just outside Dunoon, and frankly, it's one of those walks that rewards you more for effort than distance. The name means 'stone horse's head' in Gaelic, which gives you some idea of what you're looking at from the top - a dramatic crag that looks exactly like it sounds. The ascent is steep and rocky underfoot, proper rough in places, but once you're up there the views across the Firth of Clyde are genuinely worth the slog. Clear days offer sightlines to Arran and the Ayrshire coast.

This isn't a casual stroll. You're looking at a scramble more than a hike, so decent boots are non-negotiable and it'll take most people a solid hour or so to reach the top. The payoff is having this place mostly to yourself - it's not the sort of peak that pulls crowds the way bigger hills do. Kids aged eight upwards with some hillwalking experience will manage it, though younger ones might find the technical bits awkward.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Loch Eck or Stratheck are closest at less than two miles away - it's an excellent morning expedition before the weather turns. There's no charge to visit and no real facilities at the top, so bring water and maybe a packed lunch if you want to sit and take in the views. Go early if you can; the light's better and you'll likely have the summit to yourself.
