The climb up to Cardiac is steep enough to justify the name. Once you reach the top of this Monmouthshire viewpoint, the River Wye unfolds below in a proper dramatic loop, especially on a clear day when you can trace it snaking away towards the Forest of Dean. The walk itself takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Lydney, depending on your fitness and how often you stop for breath.

It's a walker's spot, really. Not much happens up there beyond the view - no cafe, no facilities, just the landscape doing what it does best. Bring water and decent footwear because the path gets muddy and the gradient doesn't ease off. The riverside scenery is genuine though, the kind that makes you understand why people move to this part of Wales.

If you're staying at Forest and Wye Valley Caravan and Camping Site or Penhein Glamping, both nearby, this works as a bracing half-day activity rather than an all-day mission. Go early if possible - the sun hits it better in the morning, and you'll avoid the afternoon crowds (yes, crowds do happen on weekends). The view is worth the effort if you like that sort of thing. If you're after a gentler ramble, it might feel like hard work for what amounts to thirty minutes on a hilltop.
