St Briavels Castle

The castle sits on a rocky outcrop above the village, all Norman keep and weathered stone walls that have somehow survived nearly 900 years of English weather. Built around 1131, it's properly impressive - you can climb the spiral stairs inside the keep and get proper views across the Wye Valley toward Wales. The main structure is the cylindrical tower, which is what you're really paying to see; the outer walls are still there but less dramatically intact.

It's a working castle in the sense that it's privately owned and occasionally hosts events, so check ahead before you go - opening hours aren't exactly generous and admission isn't always guaranteed. That said, when you can get in, it's worth the effort. Walkers love it because it's a manageable climb from Lydney, about twenty minutes from the town itself, and the walk through the village adds character to the trip. History types will appreciate the Norman architecture and the views from the top are genuinely good, not oversold.

Allow an hour if you're climbing and exploring properly. Don't expect a visitor centre or tea shop - this is archaeology, not entertainment. If you're staying at Forest and Wye Valley Caravan Site nearby, it's practically on your doorstep. The whole area is strong for walking holidays in the Forest of Dean, so slot it in alongside Whitemead Forest Park or Bracelands if you're doing a proper week. Go in spring or early autumn when the weather's cooperative and the Wye Valley looks its best.
