History buffs will spend a good two hours here without rushing, especially if you read the interpretive panels dotted around. The castle's got serious pedigree - it was where Charles I was imprisoned during the English Civil War, which adds a layer of intrigue beyond the usual "Norman overlords built this" narrative. Families with younger kids might find an hour sufficient unless they're really into castles. Teenagers who like climbing about will actually engage with it rather than trailing behind reluctantly.

The site charges admission (check ahead for current prices and opening hours before driving over) and the gatehouse contains a small museum that's worth a quick look. Sunnycott Caravan Park sits just 3.9 miles away, making it a natural stop if you're basing yourself nearby. Even if you're staying at Isle of Wight Coastal Park further out, it's not a significant detour. On a clear day it's properly worth the visit - avoid August bank holidays when the car park fills with every tourist on the island.
