Carlhurlie Reservoir

Walking the perimeter path here takes roughly an hour, though you'll want longer if the kids fancy a proper paddle in the shallows. Carlhurlie Reservoir sits quietly in the Fife countryside just outside Leven, surrounded by mixed woodland that turns absolutely crackling in autumn. It's a working reservoir still, so don't expect manicured gardens, but that's rather the point - this feels properly wild despite being so accessible.

Families with younger children will find it ideal. The path is pushchair-friendly for most of its length, and there are several spots where little ones can get close to the water safely. Dog walkers love it too, though keep leads handy as sheep graze the surrounding fields.

Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - I spotted herons, various ducks and the occasional buzzard circling overhead on my last visit. The fishing looked decent too, though I can't vouch for what's biting.

It's free to visit and there's informal parking near the access point. Early morning or late afternoon gives the best light for photos, and you'll likely have it largely to yourself. Several holiday parks dot the area around Leven, making this a lovely leg-stretcher if you're staying at places like Leven Beach Holiday Park or the various sites near Montrave Estate.
