Aithernie Castle

Standing stones and crumbling walls are about all that remain of this 15th-century tower house, but the ruins still command a proper view across the Fife countryside. Aithernie Castle sits on a gentle rise just outside Leven, its broken masonry telling the story of a once-formidable stronghold that's now largely forgotten by guidebooks.

History enthusiasts will find enough here to justify the short walk from the road. The castle belonged to the Balfour family for centuries, and you can still make out the outline of the main keep and what would have been defensive walls. It's not Stirling Castle - don't expect crowds or interpretation boards - but there's something rather satisfying about having ancient ruins practically to yourself.

Families staying at nearby holiday parks like Leven Beach or Silverburn Park might find it worth combining with a countryside walk, though younger children may lose interest quickly. The site is essentially a field with old stones, so set expectations accordingly. Twenty minutes is plenty unless you're genuinely fascinated by medieval architecture.

Being so close to Leven means it slots easily into a day exploring this part of Fife. The coast is minutes away, and it makes a decent leg-stretcher if you're touring the area's better-preserved castles and historic sites.
