Carlton Meadow Park

The walk into Carlton Meadow takes you through proper Suffolk countryside, flat and open with dykes running between the fields like a grid. You're east of Lowestoft here, close enough for a morning excursion but far enough to feel properly rural. It's a nature reserve, so come expecting wetland habitat, reed beds, and if you're lucky, some decent birdwatching - this is the sort of place where a pair of binoculars gets proper use.

The meadow itself is manageable on foot. You won't need hiking boots, but decent trainers matter because it can be boggy after rain. The best time is spring through early autumn when the birds are active and the light sits low across the water in the mornings. Summer midges can be brutal, so bear that in mind.

Families with young children might find it a bit limited - it's not a play park, and there's not much to do beyond walking and watching for wildlife. But if you've got kids who can identify a reed warbler or spot dragonflies, they'll get hours from it. Serious birdwatchers and photographers should make this part of their day. It works well as a half-morning stop if you're staying at Parkdean Kessingland Beach just a few miles away, or from Henstead Fields if you want something quieter. The reserve rarely feels crowded, which is its real charm. Admission appears to be free, though facilities may be basic - come prepared.

Don't expect facilities or a visitor centre. This is proper nature reserve management: access, open space, and that's it. Exactly what some people want.
