Carr Heyes Plantation

Carr Heyes Plantation is a proper woodland walk just outside Tarleton, Lancashire - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a managed forest with decent paths that won't have you scrambling through brambles, and on a decent day the tree canopy does its job keeping the rain off while you're wandering through.

What you get here is straightforward woodland rambling. The paths loop through the plantation, and if you're into spotting woodland birds or just need somewhere quiet for an hour's walk, it does the job well. It's not dramatic - no viewpoints or dramatic clearings - but that's rather the point. The understory is thick enough that you feel properly in the forest rather than just walking along a tree-lined track.

Families with younger kids will get about forty minutes to an hour out of it before boredom sets in, while proper walkers might spend two hours here without noticing the time. Keen ornithologists should come early, before the crowds arrive, though honestly Tarleton's got better birdwatching spots if that's your main aim.

It's ideal if you're based at Riverside Holiday Park or Leisure Lakes Caravan Centre nearby - both within three miles - and want a quick nature break without driving far. Free access as far as I could tell, though facilities are limited. No café, no visitor centre. Bring your own water. Works best as a morning walk before the sun gets too warm, or late afternoon when the light's better for photography.
