The castle dominates Carrickfergus, but locals know the real story is told inside the museum and civic centre tucked away from the seafront tourist trail. You're looking at a proper local history operation - the kind of place that actually cares about telling things right rather than just shifting merchandise.

The museum itself covers the town's medieval roots through to the present day. There's decent material on the Norman castle's construction and what life was like for ordinary folk living under its shadow. They've done a reasonable job with the industrial heritage too - textiles, shipbuilding, all that made the place tick. The civic centre element means you'll find local council information and community spaces, so it's not purely tourist-focused, which is refreshing.

You'll want to give it 45 minutes to an hour, maybe longer if you're genuinely interested in local history or have kids who like to read everything. It's the sort of stop that makes sense if you're already in Carrickfergus visiting the castle - don't make a special trip from Larne just for this. Most visitors are either locals killing time or families doing a rainy day circuit.

If you're camping at Down to Earth Wild Camping nearby, it's worth an afternoon visit. Free or cheap admission (I'd check before heading over). The real appeal is understanding how a medieval fortress became a working town - context that improves your castle visit significantly.
