Castell Coety

The ruins of Castell Coety sit quietly on a hillside near Bridgend, a short drive from Porthcawl's beaches and caravan parks. What you're looking at is a 12th-century Norman castle reduced to its stone bones - mainly the gatehouse and fragments of the curtain wall, enough to give you a proper sense of scale without needing much imagination to fill in the blanks.

It's a straightforward walk from the car park, taking maybe twenty minutes to reach the site itself. The castle was built to control the local area and changed hands several times before falling into disrepair. You can wander the grounds freely, climb onto the lower walls if you're careful, and get a decent view across the surrounding countryside. The stonework is impressive even in ruin - weathered, moss-covered, genuinely atmospheric.

Historically minded types will find it absorbing, though there's not much signage to guide you through the story. Families with restless kids might find it a bit thin - there's no visitor centre, cafe, or play area, just the stones themselves. Allow an hour maximum, unless you're the sort who likes to sit sketching or pondering medieval warfare at length.

Free entry, open year-round. It works well as a stop during a wider explore of Bridgend's heritage sites, or as a break from the caravan parks around Porthcawl and Trecco Bay. Best on a clear day when the views actually reward the climb.
