Castell-y-Gaer

Stone ramparts crown a hilltop just outside Carmarthen, marking where Iron Age warriors once defended their territory. Castell-y-Gaer translates to 'Castle of the Fort', though what remains today are the earthwork defences of a much older settlement than any medieval castle. The circular banks and ditches are still clearly visible, creating an impressive ring around the summit.

Walking up through the fields takes about twenty minutes from the nearest parking spot. It's a proper climb, but the views across the Towy Valley make the effort worthwhile. On clear days you can see right down to Carmarthen Bay. The site itself won't detain you long - perhaps half an hour to walk around and take in the layout - but it's the sort of place that gets your imagination working.

History enthusiasts will appreciate standing where Celtic tribes held out against Roman advances. Families with older children who don't mind a bit of a hike will enjoy it too, though there's nothing here for pushchairs or toddlers. The fort works well as part of a day exploring the area around Carmarthen, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Steffan Valley Caravan Park or Woodland Rise Camping. Just don't expect interpretation boards or facilities - this is ancient Wales in its raw state.
