Castle Bright

The ruins of Castle Bright sit on the outskirts of Downpatrick, a proper medieval fortress that's seen better days but still commands respect from the surrounding countryside. What remains is largely stonework - enough to understand the layout and get a sense of what this place once meant as a stronghold, but don't expect a fully intact castle experience. You're looking at a working around the perimeter, reading the stones, imagining the centuries that have worn them smooth.

History buffs will find it worthwhile, especially those interested in medieval Ulster fortifications. The setting itself is the real draw - you can see why they chose this spot. It's not somewhere you'll spend hours, though. Thirty minutes to an hour covers it properly unless you're the type who photographs every weathered corner.

The nearest proper base is Downpatrick, just a short drive away, and it's handily placed if you're staying at either Edgewater Holiday Park or Coneyisland Caravan Park. Both are within easy reach and make good starting points for exploring this corner of County Down. Neither park is more than a couple of miles from Castle Bright, so you could slot this in as a morning visit before heading elsewhere.

Free to visit and no fixed opening hours - it's the kind of attraction you can access anytime, which is refreshing. Go on a clear day if you can; the views from the site are better than the ruins themselves, frankly.
