Castle Hill

Standing 213 metres above the surrounding countryside, this Iron Age hillfort commands sweeping views across the Dorset downs that stretch from Dorchester to the coast. The climb is proper steep - no getting round that - but once you reach the ancient ramparts, you'll understand why our ancestors chose this spot for their settlement.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will get the most from Castle Hill. The earthworks are still clearly visible after more than 2,000 years, forming dramatic ridges and ditches that children love scrambling over. On clear days, the panorama takes in the entire South Dorset Ridgeway and you can spot the sea glinting beyond Weymouth.

Allow a good hour for the round trip from the nearest parking, though keen walkers often incorporate it into longer ridge walks. Early morning visits are best - fewer people and better light for photos. The site is free to explore year-round, though winter can be muddy and windswept up there.

For families staying at nearby parks like Warmwell Holiday Park or Crossways Caravan Club site, it makes a decent half-day expedition. Pack a thermos and some sandwiches - there's nowhere to buy refreshments once you start climbing. The effort is well worth it for those views alone.
