Silverlake Estate

The grounds at Silverlake Estate, just outside Dorchester, are worth a proper look if you're camped nearby at Parkdean Resorts Warmwell or Sandyholme. It's a working estate with real character - the kind of place that reminds you the Dorset countryside isn't just rolling hills and sheep. You'll find a mix of period buildings and open parkland that speaks to serious agricultural heritage. The estate itself feels lived-in rather than over-polished, which is refreshing when you're tired of theme-park attractions.

Walkers get the most out of Silverlake because you can work around the grounds at your own pace and actually see how a traditional Dorset holding operates. Families with older kids (say, eight upwards) who don't need constant entertainment will find it absorbing. Younger children might lose interest after twenty minutes unless there's outdoor space to burn off energy - the grounds do offer that, at least.

It's free to explore the exterior, though do check ahead about access during harvest time or when farming takes priority. Allow ninety minutes if you want a leisurely walk without rushing. Early morning is better than mid-afternoon when you'll have sun glare and the odd tour group.

As a stop between Parkdean and Purbeck Glamping, it breaks up a day nicely. Not essential if you're short on time, but if you've got wheels and a morning free, it's worth the detour. Real Dorset, not the postcard version.
