Castle Hill

Grass-covered mounds and earthwork remains mark where a medieval fortress once commanded views across the Lincolnshire countryside. Castle Hill sits on a natural rise just outside Alford, though what you'll find today requires a fair bit of imagination to picture the original structure.

The site offers little more than grassy bumps and ditches where walls and towers once stood. History enthusiasts might appreciate the strategic positioning and remnants of the motte and bailey layout, but honestly, there's not much to see unless you're particularly keen on medieval archaeology. It's free to wander around, which is just as well.

Families staying at nearby parks like Haven Golden Sands or Woodthorpe Leisure Park might find it a decent leg-stretcher if they're exploring the area around Alford anyway. The walk takes about twenty minutes, and kids will probably be more interested in running up and down the mounds than learning about Norman fortifications.

Best combined with a visit to Alford itself, where there's more to occupy an afternoon. The site works as a brief detour rather than a destination in its own right - useful if you're already in the vicinity but hardly worth a special trip from the coast.
