Castle Hill. Mexborough

Castle Hill rises above Mexborough like a proper statement, and once you're up there you understand why medieval folk chose this spot. It's a motte-and-bailey castle - so you get the earthwork remains rather than dramatic stonework - but the view across South Yorkshire makes the climb worthwhile. From the top you can see right across to Rotherham and beyond, which on a clear day is genuinely impressive.

The museum sits at the base and covers the castle's Norman origins and the wider history of the area. It's small, unpretentious, and honest about what it's got - no pretension, just solid local archaeology and storytelling. You'll spend forty minutes inside if you're thorough, longer if medieval fortifications genuinely interest you.

Families with school-age kids will get something out of the walk up and the views, though younger children might find the museum itself a bit dry. History enthusiasts will appreciate the context - this was a proper defensive position once. The walk itself is straightforward and takes about twenty minutes to the top.
