Castle Kennedy

The ruins of Castle Kennedy sit on a narrow isthmus between two lochs just outside Stranraer, and they're frankly more impressive from a distance than up close. What you're looking at are the remains of a 16th-century stronghold that belonged to the Kennedy family - one of the big names in this corner of Dumfries & Galloway. The castle itself is a roofless shell now, but the setting is genuinely lovely, with water on both sides and the kind of moody Scottish light that makes you understand why people fought over land here.

You can walk right up to it and poke around the outside walls without paying anything, which is the only way to experience it properly. Allow 30 to 45 minutes if you want photographs and a bit of contemplation. The walk from the nearest road is short and flat - no hardship whatsoever. History enthusiasts will get a kick out of it; kids might find 20 minutes enough unless they're into ruins and scrambling about on old stonework.

If you're staying at The Galloway Steading just down the road, Castle Kennedy makes for an easy morning outing before heading to the better-known attractions around Stranraer. It's the sort of place that rewards a quiet visit rather than a whirlwind trip. Worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't rearrange your whole holiday to see it.
