Castle Lachlan

The ruins of Castle Lachlan stand on a peninsula jutting into Loch Fyne, about three miles south of Cairndow. It's a proper ruin - not the sort of place with a visitor centre and a gift shop, but rather an honest pile of old stone that you're free to explore at your own pace. The castle dates back to the 15th century and belonged to the Lachlan clan, though what remains now is largely the work of later centuries. From the water, it's a striking sight. Up close, you can walk around the perimeter and scramble over some of the stonework, though there's not much interior to speak of. The setting matters more than the structure itself - that deep grey loch, the mountains rising behind, the sense of isolation. It's the sort of place you'd visit as part of a broader afternoon exploring the Loch Fyne coastline rather than as a destination in itself. For history buffs it's worthwhile; for kids it's maybe fifteen minutes of interest unless they're keen on clambering about on rocks. The nearest accommodation options are Strathlachlan Caravan Park, practically on the doorstep, and Fyne Glamping a mile or so further north - both would put you in reach of this and other Argyll attractions. Free to visit, and no set hours to speak of. Go when the light's decent and ideally when the midges aren't out in force. A quick stop, not a long haul.
