Craleckan Ironworks

The ruins of Craleckan Ironworks sit quietly in Argyll, a forgotten corner of Scotland's industrial past that most travellers speed past without noticing. What you'll find here are the substantial remains of 19th-century iron smelting - tall stone structures, remnants of the furnaces, and enough architectural bones to piece together how the place once functioned. It's genuinely absorbing if you're into industrial history or old engineering, though the site isn't formally developed or signposted to any great degree.

The walk around the ruins takes about 45 minutes if you're thorough, picking through the overgrown stonework and trying to work out which bits did what. History enthusiasts will get the most from it - you're essentially detective work on the landscape. Families with younger children might find it underwhelming after the first ten minutes; there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards to fill in the blanks. Walkers exploring the wider Argyll landscape will appreciate it as a good detour, particularly if you're based near Cairndow.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's little infrastructure on site. No facilities, no information, no tea van. That's partly the charm if you like discovering things raw. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Stucreoch or Fyne Glamping are both within a couple of miles - it's a cracking half-day excursion to break up park time. Just bring proper footwear; the ground's uneven and overgrown in places.
