Castleberg Hillfort

The Iron Age ramparts at Castleberg rise steeply from the moorland just outside Ilkley, and climbing them is properly knackering but worth every breath. You're looking at defensive earthworks built around 500 BC - two concentric rings of ditches and banks that would have been formidable in their day, though today they're softened by heather and grass. The views across Wharfedale once you've scrambled to the top are genuinely excellent, stretching toward Bolton Abbey and the surrounding gritstone hills.

This is one for people who like their archaeology undisturbed and unmanned. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no entry fee - you just turn up and walk it. That appeals to some and frustrates others. History buffs will find it rewarding; you can read the landscape itself if you know what you're looking at. Families with younger children might find it a bit anticlimactic unless they're already interested in Iron Age settlements. Allow an hour there and back from Ilkley town centre, maybe longer if you dawdle on top.

It slots nicely into a wider Wharfedale ramble, particularly if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Olicana is barely a mile away, or Brown Bank just a couple further on. You could combine it with Bolton Abbey or a walk down to the river. Not a day-long attraction on its own, but a solid waypoint on a proper moorland day out.
